Luxury vinyl plank flooring has 5 things that make it the best flooring: padding, rigid core, beauty of wood or stone, an impervious wear layer and ease of installation.
Luxury vinyl plank flooring has a built-in pad for comfort and sound.
The padding on the bottom of LVP rigid flooring can be made of synthetic or cork material. Either way the benefit is that the floor will be quieter to walk on than other rigid materials. It also has a subtly softer feel under foot.
Rigid core that resists dents and won’t crack or chip.
Two types of core materials are used, wood polymer often called WPC, and stone polymer core often called SPC. The difference is in the amount of weight the floor can handle before a dent or dimple is formed. Both stand up to a lot of weight, but WPC is more prone to dents and dimples than SPC. For example a heavy piece of furniture or piano resting on a WPC may leave a dimple over time.
Beauty of wood or stone.
On top of the rigid core there is a layer of printed vinyl in a huge assortment of designs and colors. Interior designers often pick luxury vinyl plank flooring because it can fit in to most home decoration plans. LVP comes in a wide variety of lengths, widths and thicknesses which makes it versatile for most applications. The wear layer on higher end LVP products is textured and registered to match the printed vinyl so the look and feel are consistent. It is very difficult to tell the difference between real wood and luxury vinyl plank.
Impervious wear layer
The homeowner has a choice of wear layers that come in 6mil, 8mil, 12mil, and 20mil. As the thickness goes up the durability increases. The top wear layer is made of anti-slip and anti-abrasion clear PVC film. Advances in wear layer technology have made the top layer of LVP scratch resistant. But in the unlikely event that it is scratched the ease of installation makes it simple to remove and replace a damaged plank.
Ease of installation
Luxury vinyl plank is less messy and much quicker to install than other types of flooring. Cutting the planks to size does not create dust like tile or wood. The snap together planks are quick to line up and connect in place. In most sites we find that it is preferable to float the floor. That means glue and nails are not required to hold the flooring in place. The benefits of floating floor installations is that the floor can be used immediately, there is no glue smell, and in the future, if changes to the floor are needed, they can be made quickly.
